Jaguar Still Leads the Way

The XK Coupe has been named the "Car of the Year" and "Luxury Car of the Year" at the UKTV People Awards 2006, beating off 15 other contenders including offering from Mercedes, Maserati, Porsche, BMW, Lotus and Volvo.  Incidentally, since the XK went on sale in March this year, Jaguar has taken 9000 orders and delivered 5000 cars worldwide, as well as picking up eight prestigious awards.  Looks like we're not the only ones that think it's Gorgeous!

Jaguar Scoops More Awards

Jaguar’s fantastic year continued into November with success at the “Scottish Car of the Year Awards”.  The new XK Coupe picked up awards for both Car of the Year and Sporting Car of the Year at the glittering occasion.

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, who was kind enough to give members of the E-type Club a very personal insight into the history of Jaguar Design at a especially organised function this October, collected the Sporting Car of the Year award and described himself as immensely “proud to have led the team that created the award-winning XK”.

Norman Dewis of Jaguar - Developing the Legend

Norman Dewis is, quite simply, a Jaguar legend. After joining Browns Lane in the 1950s he worked as Chief Tester on  high-profile projects including the development of proto-type and production cars including XK 120s, C-types, 140s, D-types, 150s and the stunning E-type.  Norman was also an accomplished racer and drove at Le Mans for the Jaguar Works Team.

Norman Dewis of Jaguar by Paul Skilleter with Norman Dewis, relives Norman’s fabulous Jaguar career with disarming honesty and humour.  The XK Club is delighted to offer members copies for the special launch price of £59.95 (plus post & packing at regional rates).  To order your copy please contact Lyndsey at the XK Club office on Tel: +44 (0)1584 781588, Fax: +44 (0)1584 781630 or email:

XKs Take Lisbon

XK Club members from across Portugal proved that classic cars don’t have to be kept securely garaged during winter, when they joined forces for a festive meet and run on 16 December.  The cars met at the Centro Cultural de Belem in Lisbon, then set off to enjoy lunch at Estalagem de Nossa Senhora de Guia, a charming hotel with stunning sea views.  As the picture illustrates, the weather-gods were indeed kind!

Our thanks to Armando Morgado, the Club’s Portuguese representative, for organising this spectacular event.

Norman Dewis signing in the Club Offices

We have read with interest reports suggesting that Jaguar’s Ian Callum was inspired by Oscar winning British actress, Kate Winslet when designing the new XK.  This must surely be good news for Kate, who is more usually associated with sinking ships.

On a related front, I have begun redesigning my kitchen along the lines of Johnny Depp.  Unfortunately the Hollywood heart-throb has, as yet, failed to respond to my requests that he attend its opening.

The New C-XF Becomes the Star of Motown

Jaguar’s new C-XF concept car stole both headlines and hearts when it was unveiled at the International Motor Show in Detroit.  The car, which was designed and built in the Midlands by the same teams that produced the award-winning Jaguar XK sports GT range in 2006 is described by the company as “a precursor to cars that will become recognised for their ground-breaking exterior looks and innovative interiors”.

With Jaguar seemingly set to return to its innovative design roots, interest in the soon to be launched Jaguar XF saloon is already mounting. In fact, even prior to its launch in September, it is already gathering awards, including at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards recognition for being “The Most Exciting Car to be Launched in 2007”.

    Going Dutch

XK Club members from across Europe have written to tell us how much they enjoyed the 8th Dutch XK Weekend.  The travelling contingent, which included representatives from the UK, Germany and Portugal, were treated to routes that visited the countryside surrounding the Noordzee canal, the evocative castle of Brederode and charming Marken.

The Club would like to extend its thanks to Tom & Marion Ekering for making the event possible, Roelof and Sherryl Prins from their wonderful work on the routes and Edwin van der Pol from the Kolvenbach company who provided technical backup.
