August 7: UK Dorset – annual Clubs’ get together
Given that we may be having to sell our grandmothers to buy a tank of petrol by that time, we thought that a slightly different format may be appropriate for this year, with a bit more socializing, and slightly fewer miles to cover. Start: ‘The Usual’ - Queen Mother Square, Poundbury, at about 11ish, leaving at your leisure from 11.30. Parking is usually not too bad, there is space to mingle, and a choice of places for a coffee or something more substantial! Don’t go crazy, as there will be a lunch and a tea ahead! The route: Heading northwest towards Evershot before turning south towards the coast, you will then be following a largely coastal route past Abbotsbury and Maiden Castle towards East Lulworth and the Weld Arms pub (bottom right). Weather permitting, we can enjoy an al fresco lunch looking out across the coastal hills. Depending on numbers, lunch will either be a free choice, or, for the sake of simplicity, a set menu …..all t.b.c. Probably best to go without desert and coffee, because……. Post Lunch: An easy and delightful 7.5 miles meander east will take you over the stunning hills of the Bovingdon tank training land, and around the ruins of Corfe castle (above left) to the newly refurbed Mortons Manor Hotel (top right), where they will serve a Dorset cream tea at £8pp, or, for £10pp more, the full works, as has become so popular and fashionable in British hotels. Corfe Castle is a delightful village, and the central location Of Mortons Manor allows you to climb up to Corfe Castle ruins themselves (bring your National Trust Pass), visit the frozen in time steam railway station, the model village etc etc. It’s a really lovely little town. The total mileage will be around 73. Total calories…hard to estimate. Please let us know if you would like to come along - email@example.com.
NEW – September, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4: UK Beds, Herts and Bucks – Shuttleworth Steam, Agricultural and Vintage Weekend
From Don Grant: “I have just received my invitation to exhibit a classic vehicle at the above event. The Saturday is dedicated to ground-based attractions with steam propelled vehicles large and small being demonstrated in front of the aircraft hangers. The Collection’s vintage buses will be running over the weekend to allow visitors to experience public transport as it was in the early 1900’s. Some of their cars will also be on show and will form the basis of a vehicle parade along the flightline each day. There will be an airshow on the Sunday that will feature Collection aircraft as well as visitors. “Shuttleworth are keen to encourage the owners of classic cars to attend and either form part of the static display or to participate in the vehicle parade, (this is at the sole discretion of the Shuttleworth Vehicles Manager). “Exhibitors will receive 2 adult passes for the duration of the event (accompanying children under 16 are admitted free). “If you are interested in attending full details and an entry form can be found at firstname.lastname@example.org scroll down to Vintage Airshow 4 Sept. “I will be attending over the weekend, please let me know if you plan to attend either day”.
